Minna's 2019 Holiday Gift Guides
The holiday season is most definitely here! It feels a little nuts this year and feels a little bit like retailers are shoving deals down your throats even earlier than usual (which, fair, for businesses it’s prime sales time), but it can feel suuuuuper overwhelming in thinking about thoughtful gifts for our loved ones.
Listen, I wish material gifts weren’t so expected in our society—this season is very costly and a pressure cooker for most people. For me, handwritten cards are always a lovely option to not overextend yourself/your budget. Then sustainability is another thing on my mind, as the holiday season definitely creates a lot of waste + emissions, so you really want to be mindfully shopping and not buying gifts for the sake of buying gifts.
But on the flip side, I love the holidays as a chance to show your thought and care for your loved ones and the people make your life better throughout the year by selecting gifts for them. I personally enjoy choosing gifts for the people in my life, and I approach it in my own way. So before I jump into my gift guides for this year, I want to share my 3 tips to keep in mind when gift shopping and looking through these guides to hopefully make this season of shopping a little less stressful and more enjoyable for you—
It really is the thought that counts. Selecting something that means something to someone will ALWAYS matter more than the $ spent; picking something because you remember the other person mentioned something offhand and thinking about their hobbies.
Try to pick something that the person you’re giving the gift to may not spend their own money on, but would enjoy! A lot of the time we get caught up in thinking, “they already have everything they need,” which may be true, but gifts aren’t about that— they’re just a way to show someone you put some thought and effort into thinking of them.
Customize gifts! If you’re on a tighter budget or want to just get a little more creative, think of making a cohesive collection of little gifts instead of one large one— for example, instead of an expensive espresso machine that’s out of your budget, get a bag of nice coffee beans and a set of cute mugs, or instead of tickets to some fancy show for several hundred dollars, make an at-home date night kit with a new board games, and wine with some new glassware.
Alright, now time to get to my gift guides!
I asked you guys over on my IG Stories who you needed most help shopping for— I got a variety of answers for definitely had some high requests for certain people, so I tailored these gift guides to that. There are a LOT of gift ideas in here, so make sure you don’t miss any in each section and check out other section’s recommendations, as there are definitely gifts that will work for multiple people!
For a shortcut, here is a jumpdown clickable menu to skip to whatever section you want to look at:

Oh parents. What to get the people who have given you everything, insist on you not having to get them anything, and them getting all the stuff they need so there’s nothing left to buy for them? 😂And then there are the in-laws/significant other’s parents, and the pressure that comes with needing to get something nice and thoughtful for them. I try to think of stuff my mom would scoff at buying and would never buy for herself, but then secretly loves and enjoys it when given to her.
23 & Me Test Kit (originally $199, now $99)
What a fun mystery box— whether it be finding out things about their ancestry they never knew, quirky tendencies that end up being genetic, it’s fun for both you and them to get these answers!
Nespresso Vertuo (originally $199, now $129)
Upgrade their coffee game and mornings with this. Make sure to teach them how to recycle the pods!
Parachute Bath Robe ($99)
I’ve gotten my mom and my aunt these, and it’s their favorite robe they’ve ever had. A little touch of luxury and comfort that they wouldn’t necessarily get for themselves.
Air Fryer
The latest kitchen gadget that’s all the rage and would be fun for them to learn to cook new foods in— and to make things healthier for those parents who loooove frying things. There’s one for $49.99 that is super cute and well-reviewed, and then a more high-tech version for $199 (originally $399!).
Indoor Self-Watering Garden ($99.95)
Better than any housewarming / host gift of flowers, because they can keep a little fresh herb garden in their home, no matter the climate! It’s a great, novel gift for parents who love to cook / have a green thumb.
Vitamin A2300 Ascent Blender (originally $550, now $399)
Yes, expensive. Do you have siblings you can split the cost with? This is the #1 tool used in my kitchen and it will be in theirs too— for anyone who tries to get their parents eating healthier like me, a quality blender gets them drinking smoothies and making soups like a pro. The Vitamix is definitely the Lamborghini of blenders, but if it’s out of the question for $, I’ve heard great things about the Ninja, which is currently $69.99!
Vitruvi Essential Oil Diffuser ($119)
Not only is this a beautiful diffuser and essential oils smell so good, there are many a therapeutic health benefit to diffusing essential oils at home. Gift this with some starter essential oils ($13).
7-Piece Wine Set (originally $59, now $41)
For any wine-loving parents, upgrade their wine nights with this set that has everything they need.
Coffee Subscription + Handheld Coffee Grinder ($89.95)
This is an amazing gift for anyone who loves coffee— it’s so fun trying out new coffee beans, and there’s nothing like freshly grinding them if they don’t have an at-home grinder.
Beam CBD Tincures + Balms
CBD has been a huge game-changer in my own health (read all about it here + to learn about CBD and why I only use Beam), but my mom also loooooooves it. I give her the tinctures to help her with her sleep and anxiety, and the CBD balm to help her with aches and pains.
This should be the easiest person on your list to buy for, but it usually is actually the hardest. Whether your partner already kinda has everything they need, or it’s a new love where you’re at that stage where you need something not over or underwhelming, it’s hard to figure out something they’ll actually enjoy. Oh, and don’t worry, there aren’t any whiskey or beer making sets on here or anything to do with golf because honestly, do men even really like those gifts (unless you’re actually into golf)?!
FOR GUYS
Crosley UO Exclusive Wood Cruiser Bluetooth Record Player ($99)
There’s something so nostalgic and romantic about record players. Getting one also means he can start that vintage record collection that he’s always been meaning to get going on!
All in 1 Pourover + Carafe ($99)
For the coffee-loving dude in your life who’d enjoy getting fancy with brewing coffee at home but doesn’t want to deal with too much hassle, this sleek all-in-1 pourover brewer makes 1-2 cups.
Weekenders + Backpacks ($67-90)
Upgrade his sad duffel bag from college with a stylish Herschel Duffle Bag ($90 to $67) or this sleek Weekender Bag from Everlane ($88) made from recyclable materials. Is he more of a backpack guy? Everlane’s Transit Backpack ($78—also made from recyclable materials) is the perfect blend of utilitarian and sophisticated. Make it a nice gift set by putting one of these Tech Pouches ($45-65) inside to help him keep organized with his chargers and electronics.
Poker Set ($55)
Highly underrated gift— card games are always one of those things that are so much fun but everyone forgets about it when trying to think of a fun activity for boys nights or for gatherings of friends. An official poker set with all the fancy chips will definitely do the trick— my brother-in-law has a set and it’s always around during our get togethers!
Travel Dopp Kit ($35)
For your frequent flier man, upgrade him from random bottles floating in his bag or a sad ziploc bag with a nice toiletry case. To make this a more complete gift, you can always add in travel-ready toiletries like Malin + Goetz Rum Body Duo ($12) + Everyday Face Essentials ($18), so he’s ready to go!
Philips Sonicare Toothbrush ($99.95 with $10 coupon)
I know, I know, a toothbrush doesn’t seeeeeem like the sexiest gift, but it’s a great gift. I got Justin this months ago and I bet he never thought he’d get that excited over a toothbrush either, but he did 🤣Oh, and make it a cute lil set with this set of 3 Marvis travel-sized toothpastes ($15)— they’re bougie but really damn nice, aka perfect for gifting.
Wireless Charging Station ($175)
This bougie little charging tray is perfect for a nightstand or a desk to keep things organized and efficient— the perfect little nerdy and useful gift that they wouldn’t get for themselves!
Foam Roller 40 oz Water Bottle ($60)
Okay, this is legit so cool— this reuseable water bottle doubles as a foam roller! A much better all-in-one than an all-in-one shampoo and conditioner.
FOR GIRLS
Travel Jewelry Case ($69)
This is definitely one of those things that I would use but would not buy for myself— I normally just throw my jewelry haphazardly in a random box while traveling, but it sure would be nice to feel like a refined adult with their stuff all organized in an oh-so-fancy case. Oh, and it’s made with vegan leather!
Personalized Jewelry
Depending on your girl, we all love a little sparkly gift— especially if it’s coming from our boo and it’s personalized. For something extra nice, Ariel Gordon’s birthstone ring ($295— heads up, allow 2-3 weeks to make because it’s made to order!) allows you to put two different birthstones on the ring. For some more affordable fine jewelry pieces, Mejuri has everything from zodiac to initial pieces. If you’re not trying to get too serious with a personalized gift but want something cutesy, this Catbird Initial Earring ($48) is just perfect.
Poketo Concept Planner ($34)
Man, do us girls love ourselves a planner / organizer. I swear by this really nice one from Poketo— such cool design and the perfect layout for your kickass lady to kick some more ass.
Dagne Dover Backpack ($135-195)
Dagne Dover makes some of my favorite travel / everyday bags because of their water-resistant and durable neoprene scuba material. Make this gift extra cute by putting a book you picked out for her in there, that Poketo planner, or this Tech Pouch ($45-65) to organize all her chargers + gadgets.
Matcha Brewing Kit ($69)
Learning how to properly make matcha is so fun, and by gifting someone this brewing kit, you’re gifting them a little new healthy ritual in their lives!
The Monthly Detox Box ($39.95-$55 for at least $90 worth of product)
Got a girl in your life that looooves her skincare? This subscription box (no commitment required, you can customize which plan you want!) of clean beauty goods is something that she would so enjoy and likely not purchase for herself.
Fellow Carter Everywhere Mug ($30)
My favorite ceramic tumbler— it’s so chic and insulates so well. If this feels like not enough as a solo gift, pair it with a gift card to her fave coffee shop or a coffee subscription!
Pampering Set
Give your girl a night to herself to just relax and unwind and give her the perfect bundle of things to enjoy it with— for some options to mix and match according to your budget and what your girl likes, I love this bathrobe by Parachute ($99— side note, I’ve gotten this for both my mom and aunt and they’re obsessed), Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask ($65), a Gua Sha tool ($28) to use with a luxe facial oil ($110— my fave facial oil bar none), a bedtime bath soak ($35), and Diptyque candles ($36),
FOR WHOEVER
23 & Me Test Kit (originally $199, now $99)
It’s always fun learning more about your partner, and this takes it to another level; plus, if you have children or are planning to, this is a fun way to learn more about your combined family’s roots!
Customized Photo Art
Do you guys live together? A cute gift idea is to create some personalized photo art— I love Minted because it’s really easy to upload some of your favorite photo memories from trips or special moments into beautiful stuff to hang in your home.
Cookbooks
This is something that both of you guys can enjoy— whether one or both of you are trying to get better (and healthier) with your cooking, cookbooks take some of the stress out of figuring out a healthy meal. It’s a cute date night idea too— I love The Dude Diet Dinnertime ($21.49) + Healthier Together ($12.52)
Game Night Kit
I used to think I was the only one that was a sucker for board games/card games, but as I’ve gotten older, I realize more of my friends love them! Playing Scrabble at home with together (👵👴) is honestly the best— some games I recommend: Scrabble Deluxe with a rotating board (currently $99) or the Tile Lock version ($15), What Do You Meme ($16 + optional bonus packs), New Phone Who Dis? ($20). Gift it with a bottle of wine, their favorite snacks, and some cozy slippers ($27), and you got yourself a real cute gift!
Tickets
Experiential gifts like concert or show tickets are so great. Has your person mentioned wanting to go see something different like the opera, ballet, or some other show? It’s the perfect memory to create together! Airbnb has some awesome experience ideas.
100% Grade A Cashmere Scarf ($98)
Super high quality, soft as a teddy bear, and a super classic shape that never goes out of style.
Jade Yoga Mat ($79.95)
It’s hard to pull the trigger on buying a really nice yoga mat for yourself, so this is the perfect gift for your yoga-loving partner that will last for years.
Ember Mug ($69)
I was going to put this in the ‘guys’ section, but realized this is something I’d totally enjoy too— this smartphone-controlled mug keeps your drink warm at the exact temperature you prefer!
Beam CBD Tincures + Balms
This CBD balm is the best thing ever to give foot and back rubs with. And for anyone with fitness-obsessed partners, the balms are incredible for sore muscles and natural recovery. Good CBD products aren’t very cheap, so it’s a really nice gift to receive IMHO.
Fujifilm Mini Link Smartphone Printer ($99)
For anyone that loves being the cameraman in your group of friends, it’s the perfect way to keep tangible records of your memories.
Hario Olive Wood Pourover Set ($102.50)
I get asked about my pourover set almost every day on IG— the olive wood pourover stand is so beautiful, and such a nice gift. I also recommend getting a gooseneck kettle with this— my favorite stovetop one ($79-99) is from Fellow, as is the electric one I currently have ($149).
Hario Cold Brew Coffee Bottle ($25)
If cold brew is more their thing than hot coffee, this awesomely designed cold brew bottle is a really cute gift. Feel free to pair it with a bag of locally roasted beans for a thoughtful touch!
Alright, now for siblings, sibling in-laws, best friends, and the like— while a lot of the gifts I’ve listed above can also work for this, here are a few additional ideas!
Fujifilm UO Exclusive Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera ($69)
Perfect for a little memory keepsake, and in such cute colors too— nicer instant camera is one of those things a lot of people mean to buy for themselves but never end up doing so because the price is a little higher than an impulse checkout purchase you can justify haha!
Trigger Point Foam Roller (originally $39.99, now $28.96)
Truly something every person should have, in my trainer self’s opinion. Every body (literally) will thank you for it.
Staub 4 QT Cast Iron Cocotte (originally $280, down to $149 + $99 for select colors)
A very grown-up kitchen essential for any at-home chef. It’s normally a pretty luxe item, at $280, but some are now available for $99, which IMHO is an incredible deal for how versatile and useful this cocotte in making just about anything— I’m considering getting this for my sis + brother in law!
slip Silk Pillowcase ($85-105)
This seems like a really random gift at first— until the recipient sleeps on it for the first time and can never go back to regular pillowcases. I’m no snooty person about bedding, but silk pillowcases are better for your hair and skin, and they just feel like magic.
UGG Slippers ($99)
I kind of hate myself for putting these on here, but truly, they are really damn comfy and warm. For an alternative style and price, Pottery Barn has some nice ones at only $27.
Bar Kit ($65)
For anyone who loves making cocktails at home, it’s nice to have some stylish adult bar accessories to up your game.
Wine Chiller ($89.95)
I didn’t know these existed, but that’s pretty perfect for any wine lover in your life. Bringing this to my next sleepover with my bestie, but my sister will probably steal this before I can.
Mug Sets
For higher-priced options, check out my list of favorite independent small shop ceramic artists, or for a lower price point, West Elm makes some adorable ceramic mugs. If you can go independent, I recommend it because it’s more special and like you’re gifting a little piece of art!
Diptyque Candles ($36-$65)
I swear, no one doesn’t appreciate a good candle. If you find that person, just take the candle back for yourself, they don’t deserve it🤣If you don’t know what scents they like, give them a mini assortment set— I love this one from PF Candle ($35)
Beauty Sets
Continuing on the beauty theme, I really like these two sets from True Botanicals, one of my fave luxury clean skincare brands— the Bodywash and Lotion Duo ($66) + Moisture Lock Duo with an overnight mask and lip balm ($103). For other beauty gift sets in varying price points, Anthropologie has a great collection, or you can gift 1, 3, or 5 months of The Monthly Detox Box ($39.95-$55 for at least $90 worth of product) for those who love trying out new product!
Now for those smaller gifts for friends, white elephant / secret santa exchanges, co-workers, or general stocking stuffers. For me, this is the territory where it’s easiest to be given useless trinkets that I wish people didn’t waste their money on, but I’ve gathered up some cute gifts that I have a hunch will not be re-gifted.
Table Tennis Set ($38)
You can set this table tennis set up anywhere— coffeetable, office table, at a bar, and people really nerd out over ping pong and tennis. Seriously.
What Do You Meme Card Game ($16)
Whenever this card game gets pulled out during a night with friends, we all end up laughing so hard. Either this or the classic Cards Against Humanity ($20)
Self Care Advent Calendar ($38)
I’d much rather get an advent calendar of fun beauty self-care than shitty chocolates TBH. Also a cute gift for someone whose personal taste you don’t quite know, so it’s good to gift a set of variety.
Kismet Salt Soak ($20)
Bath soaks, like candles, are rarely not used. This soak is the perfect size for someone to travel with too!
Miscellaneous Cutesy Cozy Items
I can’t get over this heatable plushie pad in the shape of a corgi (other animals available too—$29) that is will inevitably replace some ugly blue heatpack that looks like it’s from your school’s gym in the 80’s, this sloth-shaped mug ($16) that would make Kristen Bell cry, and some great fluffy socks ($12/3 for $30).
Everyday Sustainability Things They’ll Actually Use
I kind of love gifting sustainable items because it’s my passive-aggressive way of getting more people to practice sustainability (all in love!). Stasher Bags ($10-20) are the new ziploc bags of our generation, no one should go anywhere without a reuseable tumbler + straws ($22) or for who like to travel light, this collapsible reuseable cup ($20). Then get them composting food scraps with this tres chic composter ($40) that will actually look cute on a countertop, and using solar power to charge up their devices with this solar-powered portable charger ($31). Yaaaaaas sustainbility kween!
